6 Reasons to use Olive Oil and Olive Leaf Extract

by Justina Hurley

Studies show that Olive Leaf Extract has tangible health benefits.

Olive Oil as one of the main ingredients of the Mediterranean diet is known for its health benefits. But why is it so good? Mainly because it contains substances called secoiridoids, the main one being Oleuropein, which have known anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-hypertensive and anti-tumour effects.  Oleuropein is what gives extra virgin Olive Oil its characteristic biting, astringent taste.

The olive tree (Olea europaea) produces oleuropein abundantly in its leaves as well as in the olive fruit itself.

In a report by Life Extension Magazine analysing the various studies on possible health benefits of Olive Leaf Extract, the authors found that this supplement has a positive effect on the following conditions:

1. Blood Pressure

It was shown to be able to lower and prevent high blood pressure and in studies matched the performance of a conventional drug used for treating hypertension.

2.  Arterial Health

Artery health is improved by helping to relax the blood vessels and eliminate arterial plaque, both conditions that can lead to hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis).

3. Diabetes

Olive leaf extracts and oleuropein have been found to lower blood sugar by slowing the digestion of starches into simple sugars, slowing absorption of those sugars from the intestine, and increasing the uptake of glucose into tissues from the blood. They protect tissues from the oxidant damage and increase levels of other natural antioxidant systems in the body, broadening the degree of protection.

4. Anti- Cancer

Oleuropein helps battle cancer on a few levels by:

  • Helping to Prevent inflammation
  • Inhibiting DNA damage
  • Reducing oestrogen response in oestrogen related breast cancer.
  • Disrupting the cancer cells’ ability to invade and metastasize

5.  Brain and central nervous system protection

Nerve cells in the brain and central nervous system are helped by oleuropein’s anti-inflammatory effect and ability to reduce the damage done by oxidative stress. As a result they can be good to use post stroke or for people with disorders such as Alzheimer’s.

6. Arthritis

Science is now backing up Mediterranean folk remedies that use Olive Oil and olive leaf for arthritis. It has been shown to be good for  many types of arthritis, including gout, rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoarthritis.
